When in Doubt…

Most of us would have experienced situations that leads us to doubt the existence of God.

Sometimes, even if it is not doubting the existence of God, it can lead to the question, can God bring me out of this problem that I am facing now?

Doubt should not lead us to worry. Remember that we serve an awesome and powerful God- the creator of the Universe.

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable (Isaiah 40:28)

Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure (Psalm 147:5)

What should be done when in doubt?

  • Pray

Throughout the scripture, there are references to the power of prayer. Prayer is communication with the Lord and it is absolutely vital and necessary. When in doubt, pray and seek God’s help.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. (Philippians 4:6-7)

  • Doubt is not a bad thing.

Sometimes, doubt can also lead to strengthen our faith. Thomas is a perfect example of that.

After the resurrection, when Jesus appeared to the disciples, Thomas was not present. Thomas mentioned that unless he sees the Lord and touches the nail marks, he will not believe. When Jesus later appeared to Thomas and when Thomas saw the marks on his hands, he immediately said “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)

The testing of your faith produces perseverance (James 1:3)

  • Focus on God’s past faithfulness

Most of the time when things get out of our control, it leads to doubt and uncertainty.

During this time, looking at God’s past faithfulness and how he miraculously brought us out of a past situation helps in overcoming doubt. Thank the Lord for all the blessings that he has given.

Even when we are faithless, he remains faithful (2 timothy 2:13)

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1)
